Activity 6 - Beauty in the Commonplace

This is a picture of one of the ugliest women alive. She has every wrong feature and has no good features. Every time i look at her it makes me cringe but this woman is beautiful in some mans eyes and that was the inspiration for the poem i wrote.

Beauty lies in the eye of the holder
Beauty lies in the eye of a man
Every man has an idea of beauty
Every man knows what beauty is not
Manly features, hairy pits, and gapped teeth
this is what beauty is not
yet in another mans eyes this may be what beauty is

This has great colors. It's a painting in my house.
Haha, metaphor.

Turn around
Austin Davis

Darkness behind
its cloudy, its stormy
its left the world wet
and cold

Light ahead
its bright, its beautiful
its the promise of a new day,
a better one than the old

Yet here I am looking backwards
at the dark, at the cold
for no other reason than its still on my mind

But why do I linger
on the cold, on the bad
when its all over
its behind

All I have to do is turn around.

I see everything
All so beautiful in their own way
Shimmering glass and Shiny things
But we just pass them by as they lay

All the objects we possess
Or all the nature and it's beauty
But to some it's just a utter mess

But I see these
Things
Objects or scenes

To me they all bare
This unique quality of beauty
But people dare to say that beauty is rare

In my opinion picture A) is just some woods with a pond that are both covered in snow. But if you look beyond what you think you see, you will start to feel the emotions of a snowy day. The cold winds, the crunch of the snow as you walk, the silence of the world around you, as if you’re the only one there. You notice the dual empty colors, leafless trees, colorless grass, and dark sky. But in every dual situation in life there are always one or more bright things or people that stand out, things that are comforting and healing. Just as everything in the picture is dual, except for the lonely, full, bright, tree in the middle that stands out. It’s not afraid to be different, as we should learn from this tree we shouldn’t be afraid to stand out.  In picture B) it’s just a simple once full of life field but now is dead and empty. When I look at this picture I see the lonely little tree standing alone. What I get from this picture is the fact of, in life even the biggest, toughest things or people can come and tear everything around you, but even the smallest, weakest people/things can still stand firmly in the ground.

Too weak
Too small
To stand this fight.
Too young
Too old
To stand this fight.
Only one
Only me
To stand this fight.
As all caves in,
I’m standing firm
To stand this fight.
It’s too weak
Gods so strong
To stand this fight.
We stand with force
It’s just a clown
No longer a fight
To bring down.

Although a feather duster, I found real beauty in the midst of these feathers. From far away, all I can see is an object that picks up dust and makes me sneeze. However when I focused in on one small section of the duster, I was able to see the contrast the colors of the feathers had on each other and the influence of the light from my camera on those colors, also.

Trying to capture the random swirls in the peanut butter, I actually found beauty in the lack of peanut butter. The peanut butter had been scraped some other time in just a way to highlight the words on the outside of the container. The light coming in from the outside and lack of peanut butter on the inside caused the words to stand out in a way that made common uncommon.

Mashed potatoes are creamy and buttery and can melt in your mouth. Yet in the moment these mixers are turned off, I'm only concerned with the contents left in the bowl. These mixers have finished their job and are of no worth to me at this point. They are about to be condemned to the sink with all of the other dirty dishes. However, the contrast of light against dark makes these mixers beautiful. The light shining on the white of the mashed potatoes brings out the beauty that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

The sweat
The tears
The writhing pain
Pain in your side
Pain during the game

Yelling and screaming
Telling you to hustle once more
Makes you want to quit
But you keep playing, you’re sore

All the heart
All the energy
All the people you see
Depending on your talent
All you need to be

Sometimes it’s pressure
Sometimes it’s want
Sometimes it’s the desire deep down in your heart

Pretty, it may not be
But lacking you will not see
The sweat
The tears
All of them wanting what could be

I find beauty in a muddy,
Sweaty,
Tired
Player walking of the field
after a hard, long practice.
No one knows the feeling of accomplishment,
satisfaction,
and contentment
felt by this player.
It will all be worth it one day.
The blisters from hitting,
The strawberries from sliding,
And the sore arm from pitching.
Because a true player
doesn't feel the pain
until it's all over.
 And they don't get muddy,
Sweaty,
And tired
For themselves.
They do it for their team.

I find beauty in this home plate because it represents to me a journey, a goal, or a struggle being completed.  It is uncommonly beautiful because it is very dirty, and are seen all the time.  There is nothing special about the plate to an ordinary person, but to a player, there is no feeling like seeing home plate just a few feet away.  To me it means completion, safety, and as a pitcher it means something to aim for.  The beauty of this plate is in the eyes of the beholder, which is the player.

This picture is uncommonly beautiful to me because of how peaceful my cat looks.  He is usually hunting for food, sneaking up on something, or running from the neighbors dogs.  He is beautiful to me in this moment because I can see how intricate of a design God planned out for just a cat.  The stripes and different shades of black, white, and gray just show me how much thought God put into such a small part of the world.  Even though Boo is usually being mischievous, he looks uncommonly content, peaceful, and beautiful in this moment.
This plant is uncommonly beautiful to me because of its meaning.  I think it is a beautiful and interesting plant, but it would not be near as beautiful to me without the memories behind it.  This plant is one of the plants from my grandmother's funeral two years ago.  She was such a beautiful person and everytime I see this plant, it reminds me of her.  She was such a huge part of my life and everyone that knew her knew not only how beautiful she was on the outside, but on the inside as well.  If a guest were to see this plant in my house they may think is pretty, but i think it is uncommonly beautiful because of its meaning.

Chocolate Milk; Chase Payne

As i press the glass against my lips
I wonder what this glass has in store for me

It sends tingles to my finger tips
After my first sip i shout yippee

Slowly i drink more and more
Losing myself in the splendor of it all

Making sure none hits the floor
Cause if a drop was lost i would lose it all.

Spring time is approaching and there is nothing better than sitting out in the cool night air staring into the glowing embers of a blazing fire. Camping will come about with friends and family coming together to enjoy peaceful times around a fire. As it burns brighter and brighter there is no other sight better, and the feeling of the warmth is just a great. Baseball as been my passion ever since i was a little kid. I knew right after me and my dad threw for the first time i would be hooked for life. This image represents a part of my love for baseball, but also a bond between a father and son. They are UNCOMMONLY BEAUTIFUL!

These photos really speak to my emotions on an advanced level. The spider web, with the spider calmly resting in the middle, represents that rest after a hard day's work is completely acceptable, just as God did after creating this uncommonly beautiful world. The angry lemon causes me to reminisce on my childhood memories, playing with play-doh and trying to create new and beautiful things every time I played with it.

Jonathan Rochester

In the hilly pastures
behind my home,
I could spend hours and hours
just to roam,
watching the horses
as they play,
and wishing this was where i could spend all day,
I love the view of the open spaces,
hear the church bells ringing at a distance,
then i am soon to realize,
my time is up in this place of paradise.

I find beauty in these things that are so simple yet so meaningful. We so often over look the fight and pain that our country had to go through just to have the freedom we do these days. One thing my grandfather always loved to tell was stories of his time in the Marines during WWII. Those made me see how much our freedom truly means to us. One thing my grandfather always told me was "enjoy the little things in life, because you never know when you wont have them any more to enjoy".

I love dogs, there are some many different breeds. If you ask me, they truly are a man's best friend. No matter what, they will love you the same every day. This is my dog Champ, and he's the man. I think he's pretty handsome...or beautiful, whichever you prefer and he is always there to meet me when i walk in the front door.

I took this photo because the sky was very colorful and i wanted to share it with others. It is beautiful to me because I realize that someone doesn't have to be on the coast or out in the wilderness somewhere to see a beautiful sunset. They may simply be standing in the Walmart parking lot, they just have to be observant of the things around them.

In the evening
The darkness of the water
who knows how deep

just under the surface
you see nothing,
but if you look deeper,
deeper
even deeper

It's not water, but a picture
there all along
the things in your surroundings
upside down.

How beautiful a reflection can be.

Grant's Shoes
1. You are to incorporate your idea of beauty into a work of art by taking photographs of beauty in unusual places.  As you take your photographs, think of characteristics that you think make your photos beautiful, similar to the way Chase believed the colored tones of a fish, the way they reflect light, make a fish beautiful.  Select  and UPLOAD TO THIS PAGE two or three photos that you believe best communicate your idea of beauty found in uncommon places.

2.  Write a three or four sentence statement similar to Chase's that explains you elected to photograph this subject and what visual characteristics make that subject beautiful to you.

3.  Re-read the two poems on the In Class Activity page:  Between the Walls and You Can't Write a Poem About McDonalds.  Write AND POST your own poem about how, when and where you find beauty in unexpected places, people, or situations.
