Seeing Sense in Photographs and Poems

" poema pictura loquens,  pictura poema silens."     No, that isn't Spanish, but rather words credited to an ancient Greek philosopher - Plutarch.  It means, "poetry is a speaking picture, painting a silent poetry."   The first thing we will do as we visit POETRY, is to look into Plutarch's idea of there being a connection between the spoken and the seen,  the scribed and the sketched.  And so, we will begin this lesson by learning how to "read" photographs in order to hear their meaning, and how to "see" poems in order to visualize their intent.

On this blog, you will be able to read your assignments and post your responses.
You will be able to link to sites that will connect information, and sounds that will convey inspiration.

You will not only TAKE from the blog, but will also CONTRIBUTE to it.  You will post pictures and poems; you will add replies and questions; and you will record yourself reciting, as well.

Poetry is not passive.
It is passionate, using words to capture impressions.
It is sensual, using phrases to convey images.
It is powerful, using metaphor to connect ideas.

Contempory American poet Mary Oliver, may remind you of what you forgot you knew.  Listen as she reads "Wild Geese."
